Volunteer of the Year Betty Drake
|
Oct. 23, 2009 | For Betty Drake, volunteerism is just a way of life.
So, it’s no wonder that she recently was named 2009 Volunteer of the Year by the auxiliary of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
“Betty is lovely inside and out. The staff and patients adore her friendship, warm and understanding disposition, and her efficiency,” said Janie Lowe, director of the Department of Volunteer Services at the Cancer Institute.
Drake received the surprise award at the auxiliary’s annual fall luncheon held Oct. 22 at the home of Ellen Golden. Since 2000, Drake has logged more than 4,000 volunteer hours at the Cancer Institute. She devotes at least three days per week — and sometimes more — volunteering in the Bone Marrow Clinic by assisting patients and manning the front desk.
Drake also has completed the Shepherd’s Staff training at UAMS to serve as a volunteer chaplain in the waiting rooms.
The Cancer Institute Auxiliary has about 600 members, more than half of whom volunteer on a regular basis in the waiting areas and gift shop or help with special events throughout the year.
Funds raised by the auxiliary are distributed as grants benefiting cancer patients at the Cancer Institute and in northwest Arkansas.
Diana Smithson is auxiliary president.
