Liz Caldwell | Breast Cancer Survivor

Liz Caldwell Breast Cancer Survivor
“At age 33, a single mom of a 7-year-old daughter, I found a sizeable lump in my breast. My family doctor ignored it. After I insisted on a mammogram, a general surgeon advised a bilateral mastectomy. A second surgeon told me the cancer had likely spread.

Dazed and in despair, I was scheduled for surgery when a friend told me about the newly opened UAMS Cancer Institute. Dr. Kent Westbrook looked me in the eye and said a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation would give me a 95 percent chance of survival. That was the first hopeful thing I had heard.

After surgery, oncologist Dr. Laura Hutchins continued my care. Now 20 years later, I am thankful every day for the skill, knowledge and care I found at UAMS.”
