Nominations and applications are now being accepted for director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Charged to advance excellence in research and patient care, the director of the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute will step into the role at a time of significant momentum. With the recent integration of the Myeloma Center and under new leadership of UAMS Chancellor Cam Patterson, M.D., MBA, the new director is poised to position the Cancer Institute among the top in the nation.

The director must be an inspirational leader whose passion for the educational, clinical and research missions energize the faculty and staff, focusing their efforts on a strategic vision of excellence in all missions. He/she must also be a competent and prudent steward of the institute, guiding it through what will almost certainly be uncharted territories of change in the health care and social environment. UAMS is deeply committed to ensuring that the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is recognized among the best in the nation and has set the table for its next director to successfully lead the institute toward preeminence.

Key priorities for the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute and its new director include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Research and Scholarship Advancement: The director will be responsible for the strategy and implementation of a campaign to promote the growth of research funding and associated scholarly productivity to reach National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation.
  • Excellence in Care: The director will provide leadership to ensure multidisciplinary, patient-centered and quality care for all major disease sites with the goal of becoming the provider of choice for cancer care in the state.
  • Recruitment and Retention of High-Potential Faculty: Supporting the institute’s strategic goal of NCI designation, the director will assist the dean and UAMS leadership with the recruitment of high-potential faculty and support multi-disciplinary hiring strategies.
  • External Relations and Philanthropy: The director is the institute’s external relationship builder and spokesperson. Region to region, throughout the state and nation, the director speaks on behalf of UAMS and its outreach effort. The director works to build relationships with civic, corporate, professional, and governmental leaders throughout the state and nation.
