Coping with serious illness or other stressful life changes can be highly challenging. The experienced staff members at the Behavioral Medicine Clinic offer support for patients and family members with a range of medical and stress-related disorders.

We can help you learn ways to manage symptoms, improve coping and enhance quality-of-life and wellness. 

Our  specialists provide services to improve symptom control and functioning for individuals coping with cancer and other chronic medical conditions such as chronic paintransplantsinfertility, diabetes, irritable bowel and heart disease.  In addition, we offer treatment or consultation for psychological difficulties such as depressionanxietyanger, low self-esteem, substance abuse and family problems. Individual, group and family services are available from our doctoral-level clinicians.

UAMS offers services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, including:

  • Reducing stress and improving your quality of life
  • Coping with illness and managing symptoms such as chronic pain, nausea or fatigue
  • Consultation and treatment for psychological problems like depression, grief, anxiety or family issues
  • Mind-body strategies like meditation, visualization, hypnosis and relaxation training
  • Lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation
  • Enhanced quality of survivorship, including the Return to Wholeness program developed by Dr. Stephanie Simonton Atchley with Drs. Deepak Chopra and David Simon
  • Palliative care
  • Treatment for sleep disorders
  • Specialized services for anxiety disorders such as trauma, panic attacks and fear of MRIs or implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs)


The Behavioral Medicine Clinic is a self-referral clinic. Although UAMS does not require a referral for this clinic, some insurance providers require a referral for specialty care. Please check with your insurance provider prior to requesting an appointment. You may request an appointment by calling 501-686-8700.

What should I bring to the appointment?

For your first appointment, please bring a photo ID and your insurance card along with a list of any medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter medications. You should also bring any medical records you can provide, including slides or test results from other clinics.

For future appointments, please provide updated medical and insurance information.

Location and Directions

Location: 6th floor of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute

Parking: Parking is available in Parking 3 at the corner of Cedar and Capitol. Valet parking is available in front of the Cancer Insitute for a fee.


  • Take the Cancer Institute elevators in Parking 3 at Level 2B.
  • Exit the walkway on Level 2B of Parking 3 and you will be at the Cancer Institute’s entrance.
  • Enter the Cancer Institute and take Elevator D to the 6th floor or visit the Welcome Desk for assistance.

How do I request a prescription refill or contact a nurse from the clinic?

Please call the clinic at 501-686-8700, or you can request prescription refills during your appointment. If you originally filled your prescription at the UAMS Outpatient Pharmacy, you can also refill your prescription online.
