The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Research Training and Education core invites applications for travel grants. Travel grants are being offered to publicize the research of our member laboratories to a larger scientific community and to facilitate networking with other leaders in their research fields. Travel grant funds can be utilized to cover expenses, including lodging, conference fees, airfare, and other travel-associated expenses. Priority will be given to junior investigators and students. Travel and conferences must be directly related to the topic of cancer.
Cancer Research Training and Education Core
The Cancer Research Training and Education Core at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute was established as part of the NCI designation application process. Antiño R. Allen, PhD, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, oversees the core as Associate Director of Cancer Research Training and Education. The mission of the Cancer Research Training and Education Core is to integrate cancer training and education of biomedical researchers and community health care professionals into programmatic efforts to enhance the scientific mission and potential of the WPRCI while enriching the careers of its members and working with the community to foster future scientific leaders.
Eligibility
Cancer Institute member faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, medical/pharmacy students, and research fellows in WPRCI member laboratories are welcome to apply. To be eligible you must be presenting a poster or oral presentation. Faculty with significant extramural funding should not apply for their own travel, but may encourage their trainees and students to apply. Travel grants will only be awarded for conferences or events directly related to the topic of cancer. For questions about eligibility, please contact Dr. Allen at arallen@uams.edu.
Expectations of Awardees
Awardees will be expected to follow all current UAMS travel guidelines. Importantly, all travel must be approved by the travel administrator in the awardee’s department before reimbursement. Travel approval should be sought early (first) in the process. For further information on this, please see UAMS Travel Guidelines. Awardees will be expected to provide receipts within the deadlines and in accordance with the UAMS travel reimbursement policies found UAMS Travel Reimbursement Guidelines. Awardees will process their travel through their Department travel administrator, then the WPRCI will reimburse the awardee’s Department.
Application Process
To apply for a travel fund grant, follow this link Travel Grant Application. Applications must be received at least 6 weeks prior to travel.
Award
Each applicant may be awarded up to one travel grant per fiscal year. The award’s maximum amount is determined by the applicant’s academic rank. Please use the following chart to determine the maximum amount to be awarded.
Applicant Rank | Grant Amount |
Professor | $ 500 |
Associate Professor | $ 500 |
Assistant Professor | $ 1000 |
Post-Doc | $ 1500 |
Graduate Student | $ 1500 |
Medical/Pharmacy Students or Fellows | $ 1500 |
Grants are competitive and are awarded at the discretion of the Associate Director for Cancer Research Training and Education and the CRTEC Travel Grants Committee on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are 2 funding cycles per fiscal year. Funding Cycle 1 runs from July 1st to December 31st and Funding Cycle 2 runs from January 1st to June 30th. Applications are considered by the date of travel and not the date of application when determining which funding cycle to allocate funds.
Once the budgeted funds for a funding cycle are exhausted, no further awards will be approved. Only one award will be given to an applicant per fiscal year. The applicant may apply for a travel grant during future funding cycles. While applicants are encouraged to apply early, applications should not be submitted more than 6 months before an event.
Inquiries before applying to determine if travel funds remain are welcome and can be directed to Dr. Allen at arallen@uams.edu.
Review Process
The Associate Director for Cancer Research Training and Education and the Travel Award Committee will review and approve applications for travel grants and notify applicants of funding decisions within two weeks after receiving the complete application.
Expenses
Awardees are expected to follow UAMS expense and reimbursement guidelines. Guidelines may be found here UAMS Travel Reimbursement Guidelines
