Oral, head and neck cancers include those that arise in the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, thyroid glands, salivary glands, throat or larynx (voice box). In 2017, there will be an estimated 106,540 new cases of cancer of the thyroid, oral cavity and pharynx cancers in the United States, and approximately 11,710 deaths from these cancers.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) has recently emerged as a leading cause of tonsil and base of tongue cancer, particularly in nonsmokers and younger age groups. While the majority of all head and neck cancers are linked to tobacco and alcohol use, more than half of tonsil and base of tongue cancers are linked to HPV.
Signs and symptoms of oral, head and neck cancer include sores in the mouth that do not go away, a growth or swelling in the neck, persistent sore throat, trouble swallowing or voice changes.
