The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Research Training and Education core invites applications for travel grants. Travel grants are being offered to publicize the research of our member laboratories to a larger scientific community and to facilitate networking with other leaders in their research fields. Travel grant funds can be utilized to cover expenses, including lodging, conference fees, airfare and other travel-associated expenses. Eligible applicants include Cancer Institute member faculty, as well as post-doctoral fellows, medical students and graduate students in WPRCI member laboratories. Priority will be given to junior investigators and/or those presenting a poster or oral presentation. Travel and conferences must be directly related to the topic of cancer.
Cancer Research Training and Education Core
The Cancer Research Training and Education Core at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute was established as part of the NCI designation application process. Thomas Kelly, PhD, Professor of Pathology at UAMS oversees the core as Associate Director of Cancer Research Training and Education. The mission of the Cancer Research Training and Education Core is to integrate cancer training and education of biomedical researchers and community health care professionals into programmatic efforts to enhance the scientific mission and potential of the WPRCI while enriching the careers of its members and working with the community to foster future scientific leaders.
Faculty who are full members of the WPRCI, as well as post-doctoral fellows, residents, graduate students, and medical students who are employed by UAMS and currently working with full members of the WPRCI are welcome to apply. Preference is given to junior investigators and/or those presenting a poster or oral presentation. Faculty with significant extramural funding should not apply for their own travel, but may encourage their students and post-docs to apply. Travel grants will only be awarded for conferences or events directly related to the topic of cancer. For questions about eligibility, please contact Dr. Kelly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Expectations of Awardees
Awardees will be expected to follow all current UAMS travel guidelines. Importantly, all travel must be approved by the travel administrator in the awardee’s department before reimbursement. Travel approval should be sought early (first) in the process. For further information on this, please see UAMS Travel Guidelines. Awardees will be expected to provide receipts within the deadlines and in accordance with the UAMS travel reimbursement policies found UAMS Travel Reimbursement Guidelines. Awardees will process their travel through their Department travel administrator, then WPRCI will reimburse the awardee’s Department.
To apply for a travel fund grant, follow this link Travel Grant Application. Applications must be received at least 6 weeks prior to travel.
Each applicant may be awarded up to $1,500 for one travel opportunity per year. The actual award amount is based on need, current per diem for travel area, available funds, and amount of travel expenses actually incurred. Grants are competitive, and are awarded at the discretion of the Travel Grants Director on a first come, first serve basis. Once the $25,000 travel grants fund has been exhausted, no further awards will be approved until the following fiscal year. Only one award will be given to an applicant in the funding cycle. The applicant may apply for a travel grant during future funding cycles. All travel grants must be used within one year of award. Inquiries prior to applying to determine if travel funds remain are welcome and can be directed to email@example.com
The Associate Director for Cancer Research Training and Education and the travel award subcommittee will review and prioritize applications for travel grants, communicate recommendations to the Cancer Institute Director for selection, and notify applicants of funding decisions within two weeks after receiving the complete application.
Awardees are expected to follow UAMS expense and reimbursement guidelines. Guidelines may be found here UAMS Travel Reimbursement Guidelines
